The Kumon Story

The Kumon Programme was started in Japan in 1954 when Toru Kumon, the founder, desired to help his child foster a mind-set of self-learning. From these humble beginnings the programme has grown to becoming the largest independent education provider in the world, with currently over 4 million Kumon students in over 50 countries and regions across the globe.

Since 1997, Kumon South Africa is a fully owned subsidiary of the Kumon Institute of Education in Japan and currently has over 200 Centres in South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Namibia and Zambia.

The Kumon franchise is a business that offers the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to children of all ages and abilities from a Kumon Study Centre, together with homework study. The Kumon Programmes are suited to home-based learning, with facilitation and support provided to families through both in-Centre (physical) as well as online classes.

The Ideal Kumon Franchisee

The ideal Kumon franchisee has a heart for developing people through education, and is interested in owning and managing his/her own business within the support framework of a franchise network.

Our franchisees come from all kinds of backgrounds, not just education, but it is essential to have an aptitude for Maths and English and a commitment to continuous learning and development. An applicant needs to be eligible to work in the country where he/she is applying for a Kumon Centre.

Training and Support Provided by Kumon

Each new Kumon Centre starts with a comprehensive business plan, and the franchisee applicant is provided with support during this process. The training for new Kumon franchisees consists of 10 days of training, conducted on consecutive week days (i.e. excluding weekends).

Training takes place in in Johannesburg (and via Zoom during times of social distancing). Once the Centre is opened, further training on the unique Kumon Maths and English Worksheets and Methodology is provided on a frequent basis and in this way Kumon franchisees are always improving their skills and abilities.

Costs Involved in a Kumon Franchise

The cost of the franchise is a minimum start-up capital of approximately R60 000,00-R100 000,00. The costs are variable depending on location, choice and preparation of the venue as well as current market conditions. This amount does include the license fee to operate the Kumon Centre. Additional working capital is dependent on what each franchisee would need to ensure financial stability while growing the business.

When it comes to making a choice about investing in an educational franchise, you would do well to invest in a tried and tested company with a wealth of franchising as well as education knowledge, both locally and internationally.

Adila Tayob, Makhado Kumon

Adila Tayob, Makhado Kumon

Adila opened a new Kumon Centre in Makhado, Limpopo, in September 2019. She started with fifty-nine students in her first month, and with consistent and ongoing marketing activities, doubled the centre size within seven months. Such swift growth is unprecedented for most Kumon Centres, and especially for one situated in a small regional town.

Adila got to know about the Kumon Programme when her nieces were Kumon students. She was impressed with the learning attitude she witnessed as they worked through the programme. Adila is a mom to two boys aged 8 and 6, and decided to enrol them on the programme too. In this way she experienced the programme first-hand as a parent.

Having achieved a BA LLB Degree through UNISA, Adila worked as a Business Studies teacher for 11 years at a private school. Thereafter, from a desire to change careers and become self-employed, Adila decided to look into becoming an Instructor because she is passionate about education. She felt favourable towards Kumon because of its reputation and her experience of its amazing results.

Adila has discovered that part of what makes the Instructor role so fulfilling is being able to watch the students grow and make progress, and to hear good reports from the students, parents and teachers. Adila believes that every child who comes to the centre and who makes even a little progress, leaves the centre smarter than they were before they got there.

As an Instructor, Adila believes that it is crucial for prospective franchisees to have a passion for both education and children. She believes that it is important for candidates to have a good background in both mathematics and English, and now that she is in the role, she understands why a University Degree is a requirement. Adila adds that as an Instructor you must also be patient and understanding. It is important to focus on the business side of the role as well, and to have control over this aspect from the beginning.

Adila has the following to say to prospective applicants: “If you feel like you have what it takes do not hesitate as it is extremely fulfilling watching children grow and reach their “Aha moment” right in front of you. The days ahead will be full of hard work but will bring you fulfilment and contentment.”
