The Kumon Story

The Kumon Programme was started in Japan in 1954 when Toru Kumon, the founder, desired to help his child foster a mind-set of self-learning. From these humble beginnings the programme has grown to becoming the largest independent education provider in the world, with currently over 4 million Kumon students in over 50 countries and regions across the globe.

Since 1997, Kumon South Africa is a fully owned subsidiary of the Kumon Institute of Education in Japan and currently has over 200 Centres in South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Namibia and Zambia.

The Kumon franchise is a business that offers the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to children of all ages and abilities from a Kumon Study Centre, together with homework study. The Kumon Programmes are suited to home-based learning, with facilitation and support provided to families through both in-Centre (physical) as well as online classes.

The Ideal Kumon Franchisee

The ideal Kumon franchisee has a heart for developing people through education, and is interested in owning and managing his/her own business within the support framework of a franchise network.

Our franchisees come from all kinds of backgrounds, not just education, but it is essential to have an aptitude for Maths and English and a commitment to continuous learning and development. An applicant needs to be eligible to work in the country where he/she is applying for a Kumon Centre.

Training and Support Provided by Kumon

Each new Kumon Centre starts with a comprehensive business plan, and the franchisee applicant is provided with support during this process. The training for new Kumon franchisees consists of 10 days of training, conducted on consecutive week days (i.e. excluding weekends).

Training takes place in in Johannesburg (and via Zoom during times of social distancing). Once the Centre is opened, further training on the unique Kumon Maths and English Worksheets and Methodology is provided on a frequent basis and in this way Kumon franchisees are always improving their skills and abilities.

Costs Involved in a Kumon Franchise

The cost of the franchise is a minimum start-up capital of approximately R60 000,00-R100 000,00. The costs are variable depending on location, choice and preparation of the venue as well as current market conditions. This amount does include the license fee to operate the Kumon Centre. Additional working capital is dependent on what each franchisee would need to ensure financial stability while growing the business.

When it comes to making a choice about investing in an educational franchise, you would do well to invest in a tried and tested company with a wealth of franchising as well as education knowledge, both locally and internationally.

Carol Dickson, Eros Kumon

Carol Dickson, Eros Kumon

Carol became the new owner of the Windhoek, Eros Kumon Centre in March 2019, and currently has over 200 students. Prior to becoming a Kumon Instructor, Carol taught learners with barriers for 18 years. She is a mom to three children who are now in their twenties – all of whom did Kumon when they were at Primary School. Her eldest son battled with mathematics at school and Carol was introduced to Kumon through the owner/principal of the school where she taught. Carol eventually also worked as an assistant at the Kumon Centre in Windhoek.

Working with children has always been Carol’s calling, and when she saw what a difference Kumon made with her own children, she desired the same for others. It is Carol’s heart to serve as a mentor and to guide children through their work while providing direction, support and encouragement.

Every day is a new day at the centre. Carol loves seeing the joy on the faces of the students when they are able to understand something they previously could not. A good Kumon day for her is one in which she sees continued growth in the abilities of her students. Carol’s aim is that all her students grow on a daily basis, towards reaching their full potential.

Carol believes that it is essential that Instructors have a passion to help children to reach their dreams and to guide them to their full potential. It is important that Instructors are very supportive, friendly and personable. They also need to know and understand the Kumon worksheets well, and to demonstrate confidence as an Instructor.

Her advice to people thinking about becoming an Instructor is that you need to be committed to be effective. You need to become the type of Instructor that motivates, inspires and encourages your students to strive for success.

Carol has a great desire to help children succeed, and with the Kumon Programme, she gets to do this on a daily basis. For her, this is the most fulfilling aspect of the Kumon Instructor role.

During this time of physical distancing and strict hygiene protocols, Carol is offering both in-Centre as well as online support to her Kumon families.
