Five Mistakes to Avoid When Working from Home

This type of opportunity has a huge number of benefits: lower overheads and greater flexibility.

Work from Home mistakes

However, turning your home into the centre of operations is no easy task. Franchise Direct South Africa points out five mistakes to avoid when turning your home into the place where you also work.

Mistake #1: Not having a dedicated work space

Taking the first step can be difficult. This is particularly true if you're sitting on the same couch where you'll be watching your favourite show or movie, and everyone can give in to distractions, so it's critical that you clear out your work area and focus on business activities only.

If you have an extra room or space to set up as an office it would be ideal, but this is not always the case. In that case, the workplace can be any area that has space, is free of distractions and is dedicated solely to work.

Mistake #2: Failing to separate work and home tasks

The flexibility that comes with working from home can be misleading, which is why certain boundaries between work and housework must be established, as it can be difficult to set a schedule when you also need to do
the dishes and laundry. If you are working from home, it is essential to establish clear work schedules. Of course, it is not always possible to stick to a work routine, but it will always be useful to have that plan in place.

Mistake #3: Dressing for the place, rather than the job

Dressing the way you want is one of the great advantages of working from home. However, if you are dressed as if you must go to the office or ready for work, you will probably be more prepared for work. That is, if you dress for work and take off your pyjamas, you will feel much more prepared to face the workday.

Mistake #4: Assuming you can't have meetings

Just because you're at home doesn't mean you won't have meetings with employees and/or shareholders. We live in the age of technology and there are so many great communication apps that make remote meetings as easy to conduct as real-life meetings.

All you must do is find a quiet space, turn on the laptop or your smart device and get to work. Of course, you should probably make sure the dog is out first....

Mistake #5: Not putting that extra money to good use

By not paying for premises and having very little overheads, you may have some extra money that you can use to make your task suit you better. It's your business, so you'll want to feel comfortable running it!
